John Gill, D.D. (1697 1771) was born at Kettering, in Northamptonshire, England. Gill attended grammar school, where he learned Latin and Greek, until the age of eleven. Continuing with his studies alone, Gill eventually taught himself Hebrew. In 1720 he was called to pastor Horsleydown church in London, serving there until his death 51 years later. He received a Doctor in Divinity in 1748 for his three volume Exposition of the New Testament. He completed his Exposition of the Old Testament in 1766. Gill authored many other treatises and books including his Exposition of Solomon's Song and his masterful defense of Calvinism The Cause of God and Truth. John Gill was a Strict and Particular Baptist.
